So why is smart home infrastructure not already a standard part of every new build? The simple answer is that the building industry is still catching up. Smart home technology is a relatively new category compared with foundational systems like electrical and plumbing, which have been part of home construction for generations.

Indoor plumbing began to appear in the mid-1800s, but it was not until the 1930s that plumbing codes were introduced to protect public health and reduce disease caused by poor sanitation and inadequate infrastructure. Around that time, indoor plumbing became more common in everyday homes instead of being considered a luxury. You have a plumber. You have an electrician. Now you also need a technology integrator.

Keep the “You have a plumber. You have an electrician. Now you also need a technology integrator.” sequence — that’s strong.

1. Use CAT6 as the minimum standard for network cabling

CAT stands for category cable , which is low-voltage wiring used to carry data and, in many cases, power for connected devices. If you remember plugging your laptop into the internet before Wi-Fi became common, that was a network cable.

Each generation of category cable offers greater speed and performance. CAT6 provides significantly better capability than CAT5, yet we still see CAT5 installed in some new home builds.

Using older cable standards can limit the performance of the devices and systems in your home. For that reason, we recommend using nothing lower than CAT6 for residential network infrastructure. In some cases, CAT6A or fiber may also be appropriate, especially when planning for long cable runs, higher bandwidth demands, or future expansion.

2. Plan ahead for wireless, lighting, audio, and security

The speed and reliability of these systems depend heavily on good infrastructure. Planning ahead during construction gives you more flexibility, better performance, and lower installation costs later.

We recommend prewiring for:

TV locations so streaming devices and smart TVs can be hardwired for reliable performance
Security camera locations at the front, back, and sides of the home, since many modern cameras use CAT6 for both communication and power
Video doorbells , which are one of the most important points of visibility and communication at the home
Home office locations so laptops, desktops, and other work devices can operate at maximum speed and stability
Security panels and control systems so they have dependable power and connectivity
Wireless access points in key areas of the home to provide strong Wi-Fi coverage for phones, tablets, and other mobile devices

Creating this infrastructure before the walls are closed is one of the smartest investments you can make. Prewiring during construction is significantly more cost-effective than trying to add wiring after the home is finished. Once insulation, drywall, and other finishes are in place, access becomes much more limited, and in some cases it may no longer be practical to wire certain locations cleanly.

3. Prewire for audio and entertainment

And if they fail to check on their firmware from time to time, they could be leaving themselves open to a security risk.

If people never update their router firmware, they expose themselves to various security risks that could compromise their network and sensitive information. Some of the security risks associated with not updating router firmware include:

Ok back to my client, and the morning of the installation. I started the firmware update and thought for sure this would resolve any issues. After the reboot, the 5ghz was still off. I checked the settings, and it was turned on as far as the Netgear router was concerned. Now I will say I don’t have much experience with Netgear other than the two or three I have owned over the years, so my assumption at this time is that the radio array has simply failed. We proceeded with the rest of the installation, and everything went fine. We left at around 1 P.M job was completed, and happy clients playing with the new toys. However at 5 pm that night I received a text message from the client detailing some issues. After some trouble shooting via text I knew a virus of somesort was present. Not knowing if I would have the internet at their house now, I decided to download the firmware again on my laptop, with the thought process of a factory reset being my only hope, and taking something back that far might cause a connection problem. Upon the download from the Netgear web page, windows spotted and labeled it as a “Virus”. Of course, my concerns are growing, and I have to get across town to at least get the router into limp mode so they can have internet over the weekend in case I cannot save this older router. As I drove across town my wife the always amazing tech, did some “Googleing” (I think this is a word now). And discovered this was a common issue, as Microsoft Defender is not perfect, and makes a mistake from time to time. (The detailed answer as to why is not relevant to dive into for this blog). Now I am at the client's house armed with the paperclip for a factory reset, or two…. Mabe three. Finally, get it back, set the SSID and passwords to their previous settings, of course with a new and more secure password. Secure enough they should be good for the next 226 years for the common algorithms to break. As I returned home, the problem was solved my wife reminded me of the time she pet-sat for her Uncle Chris. Sorry, Chris, we are using you as an example. While staying at her uncle’s house, she of course connected to the Wi-Fi. This was when my wife was in her second year of college for computer programming, she was likely at a heightened sense of awareness. Shortly after her phone started getting a lot of pop-ups. Bombarding her phone with all sorts of the kinds of websites set up and designed to get you clicking on them, and that starts to worm their way into your web browsers. With the use of that amazing search tool “Google”, she quickly found some possible reasons for the issue, after a quick discussion a new router was purchased and setup was done more securely. Problem solved. At least for her, I guess we should ask Uncle Chris if he has checked that lately because it has been 8 years.

Having experienced numerous surround sound systems in the past, my initial impressions of the Sonos Arc weren't extraordinary. The price seemed steep for its sound output, and as a direct dealer for Sonos, I enrolled in professional training to explore its full potential.

The Sonos Arc, equipped with eleven high-performance drivers and upward-firing speakers for three-dimensional sound, initially presented itself as an impressive soundbar. However, it became apparent that to truly unlock the essence of Sonos, additional components were needed. While my formative years were dominated by computers, adolescence witnessed a shift towards another fervor: music. A Christmas gift in 1991, my first "Boom Box," catalyzed a fresh journey of exploration. I found myself dissecting internal wiring, delving into the nuances of OHM loads, and elevating the sound system to create a room-shaking experience. This fascination organically extended to cars when I reached driving age, but that's a narrative for another occasion — a tale involving Missoula and an indelible drive at the age of 14.

Piece by piece, I continued to fortify my understanding of what would eventually morph into the intricate tapestry of Home Technology. At 19, I designed and constructed my inaugural home theater, transforming my living space into the definitive destination for movie nights among friends. On April 8th, I reset the clients previously purchased router to bypass the previous company's credentials. Once I had full access to the product adjustments were made to both the router and the two switches on the network. One of the major factors identified was the absence of Spanning Tree Protocol, a critical component for preventing network loops and ensuring stability.

In less than an hour of work, the network was optimized to its prime performance.

Additionally, Quality of Service (QoS) aspects were implemented on April 16th, prioritizing the client's laptop during business hours. This strategic adjustment made the most out of an ISP's service notorious for latency issues, further enhancing the network's efficiency and reliability.
